Stylesheet load issues after update

Hi there,

I’ve had an issue on a couple of sites recently. One site a lot, though now I’ve noticed it on two others.
It seems that after an update, the site is trying to load the old version of the style sheet (as it changes with each update with the version number):

Often clearing the cache seems to fix it but sometimes it doesn’t.

It seems to only be on Rocket.net’s hosting as I’ve not noticed it on sites I have elsewhere.
I’ve done the standard deactivating all plugins etc and the only performance plugin I have is Perfmatters but I don’t have any CSS minification etc on there on them.

Rocket have asked if there’s anything that may be causing it within the theme. It seems to need a hard refresh when viewing it when it happens, but it happens across multiple browsers, people and devices so we’re struggling to work it out!

Hi @RubberDuckers,

Thanks for reaching out.
It mostly happens due to the cache, if clearing the cache does not help, you need to contact the Hosting Service provider to check for server-level cache.

NOTE: If it resolves after clearing the cache or hard refresh, it should not be a problem with Theme.

Thanks

Thanks, I’ve been talking with them a lot, along with Perfmatters and neither can find an issue their end so said to chat to you guys.

The cache clear doesn’t always resolve the issue which is why it’s an odd one too, though I do agree that it is more likely at the server side due to it only being on Rocket.net that I seem to have this issue.

Is there anything in particular that you can think of that may help them look at it a different way?

Hi @RubberDuckers,

If clearing the cache doesn’t always fix the problem, it likely means the issue is more complex. Since this only happens on Rocket.net, it could be something on their end. However, as we’re not able to see the issue on our side, we can’t be certain.

It might be helpful to keep contacting their support team with any error details so they can look into it more closely.

Thanks

Thanks @tristup, I’ve been doing that consistently over the last few months which is why I’ve come here as they can’t see anything and it’s just the specific theme CSS file that causes any issues.

I do agree it must be something with their configuration due to the fact it’s only on their servers (long time X/Pro user on multiple servers) it’s just been recently on Rocket that it has started happening.

You are most welcome, @RubberDuckers.
Just to add something, my hunch is that there could be a piece of code in the theme CSS that is flagged by RocketNet.

Thanks - this is what they said, which shows that (as this is linked to theme updates) the cache should clear and it shouldn’t be an issue:

Our system does not clear cache when a individual file is changed, this is completely expected. We clear cache when this is part of a theme update or a plugin update, or even a page post/change, for example. But if a single file gets changed, our system won’t clear the cache for that file unless the cache is cleared for the entire site.

If the CSS update is part of a theme update, it’s expected that our system clears the cache automatically - This is just how the default setting from Wordpress works, and our system triggers cache clears at the same rate Wordpress does.

I actually have an old (and the original) site I noticed this issue on. It’s currently sat on Pro Version: 6.5.16 and as you can see, it’s broken on load:

https://fh63v0xs8q.wpdns.site/wp-content/themes/pro/cornerstone/assets/css/site/cs-theme.7.5.16.css?ver=7.5.16 is 301 erroring

Thought I’d show you in its broken state before I run updates and try and see what happens.
