Site down after plug-ins updated

Our site: www.paulettebodeman.com was working and we recently installed updates to several plug-ins. These plug-ins have been used on the site and no new plug-ins have been added.

We cannot access the site at all. It appears that the site cannot be found, or is simply not loading.

Can this be a problem with updating plug-ins?

And, any suggestions on how to get the site back?

Thanks, much appreciated.

Hi Grant,

We’re sorry you’re having this issue. I can see your site doesn’t even load to show an error. At this moment, it is best to consult the server provider. Check in with them and ask for the error log. Usually they can fix this for you. They can revert it back to a previous working copy. Server usually saves a backup of your site unless it is not included on the service you have with them.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, AWS is super slow in responding to any support issue.

We did make a backup using Updraft Plus prior to the site going down.

Not sure if this includes X-Theme and all plug-ins as we have never had to restore before.

Looking for a little guidance on this as the site has now been down for 1 1/2 days.

We are considering making a new instance in AWS and then using Updraft to restore. Not sure if this will work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Grant,

Error 503 may not be theme related. It could be because of a server error or that the server has some issues.

Please check out this article to troubleshoot your issue:

If the issue persists, we highly recommend that you contact your hosting provider instead. They should be able to fix it in no time.

Regards.

Thanks for the replies. After 2 days, AWS tells us that our EC2 instance has run out of space.

So, not being AWS experts, we are trying to figure that out.

A couple of questions about X-theme, space and AWS.

AWS tell us that we have run out of EC2 space on our instance. Without using command line inputs, is there anyone familiar with AWS and can tell us how to monitor the space on the instance, how to cleanup the space on the instance, and how to monitor in the future.

AWS: does anyone know how to view the actual space used on the EBS volume?

X-Theme: once we get back up and running, is there a general way to cleanup our X-theme. For example, we have a number of plugins listed under plug-ins. Some are not being used at all and this is probably taking up space on our system. Can we simply delete these as we are not using them?

Thanks for all the feedback. Our site has been down for 3 days trying to get this working.

We have been able to restore our site using a backup, however, when get view the site at the new IP:
http://13.58.36.138/courses/ We can see all the images, etc.

When we check the media library, it shows all items as “unattached”, clearly we can’t go back and re-attached hundreds of images to pages.

How can we restore this? We have a backup in Updraft but it may be a day out of sync. And, we can’t lose all the work in between.

Hi Grant,

Yes, absolutely. If you are not using them, you can just remove them on the site since they take space and also load some resources which might add to the site’s load time.

Are the images still present in the uploads folder in your site files? To verify that, login through FTP then go to wp-content/uploads then find the images that are still there.

It is also possible that you might just need to regenerate your thumbnails. Please check this plugin for that:

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the response. All the thumbnails are in the media library, but we had to go back and re-attach almost all of them. Hours of wasted time. Would have thought that an UpDraft restore would do that. It didn’t.

Under Plug-ins/Themes, there are 4 themes listed and says installed:
StoreFront

Twenty Nineteen (and 2 others Twenty xxx) - Can these be deleted. Not sure why they are there. Says activated.

Thanks

Hello Grant,

Twenty Nineteen theme and other default WP themes are usually present in the themes folder because these are the default. You can remove all of themes that you are not using to saved some space. Please also go to the plugins section and delete any of the plugins that are not active as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, just wanted to ensure we weren’t deleting anything that was required.

Thanks

You are most welcome!
