Self-hosted background video not playing

Hello, I have loaded a short (under 20-second) video to my server with the following path: http://cookesbrakes.jove.design/repair-services.mp4

I inserted the video as the top section background on this page: http://cookesbrakes.jove.design/services-and-repair-philosophy/

I must be doing something wrong, but the video is not playing either in cornerstone or when I reload the published page. How can I get it to work?

I also tried hosting the video on YouTube, but then when I linked to that it did not fill the section. I would like the video to be full width, but just crop down the top/bottom and to be responsive. Does the X background video function allow this?

Thank You!

Hi There,

Thanks for posting in! It seems that your video path does not exist. http://prntscr.com/jm8k1h
Where did you uploaded it? If you have uploaded it through the WordPress Media section, the video url should be something like https://example.com/wp-content/wp-uploads/01/01/2018/video-file.mp4

Please check your video path and make sure that it is correct or it exist so that it will display as a background video.

Hope this helps. Kindly let us know how it goes.

Hello and thank you! Getting back to this now after the holiday.

I had uploaded the file to my root directory with FileZilla. I didn’t see a public html folder so I just put it in the root, which is probably my rookie mistake. Either that or my host doesn’t support that. In any case, after doing as you said and using WP to upload the video, it is now playing in the background.

My next question, however, is how can I change it so that the video only takes up as much space as the Section where I’ve placed it, instead of overlapping down under the next section or two? (I want it to be wide and skinny–just as a background for that section.) If the answer is that I need to crop and export the video in that format before uploading, could you suggest a (free or inexpensive) tool to accomplish that? (I’m on a mac and I don’t think iMovie offers the option of exporting in non-standard formats.

Also, I don’t know why the title and the quote are displaying in the same column on the site, but they are in the same row in Cornerstone (1/3 - 2/3).

Thank You!

Hi There,

Sorry, but I don’t see both of that issue on my end. The video background only covers the first section and the 1/3 - 2/3 columns is on the same row, please clarify.

And try clearing your browser’s cache.

Cheers!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I actually fixed the issue in the interim by using a different ‘element’ for the title ‘Our Services’. I believe that I originally used the ‘Text’, but once I used the ‘Headline’ element, the problem went away. For some reason there was a bad interaction between whichever elements I used initially.

I also set the background for subsequent white sections to ‘white’ instead of the default clear, because at one point the video was actually playing behind all of those sections (not the gray sections).

I’m sorry I can’t say for certain exactly what fixed the problem, but there was definitely a problem before… hopefully those two tips might help others experiencing these issues.

Hey There,

We’re glad that the issue is now resolved.
