Restore an old backup

Hi there!

I have an old X version site backup that I want to restore in the current X version install. Is this possible? What kind of difficulty will I have?

Hello @kpilcher,

Thanks for writing in! If you are using a 3rd party plugin to create a backup of the site, it will also be easy to use that 3rd party plugin to revert to the created backup. It would be more difficult if what you have is a database backup.

Thank you for the reply @ruenel,

I am using updraftplus for backups. I have a full backup of the old site. I was just concerned that the backup of the site using an old version of XTheme would not work if I restore it to the newest version of XTheme.

HI @kpilcher,

I suggest that you restore the backup in your staging area an let see how it goes when you try updating your X theme and cornerstone plugin to the latest version.

Well, I gave restore a shot and now wordpress is dead (“There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”). I’ll try another restore leaving out plugins and see if that helps.

I would suggest the same as my colleague, please restore the backup into a staging server. And then try to update the X in the staging server, if everything works fine, migrate the staging into your live server.
If you are trying to restore the backup after updating the X, it might get an error. So please follow the way suggested above.
