the page is refreshing but the product is not adding to cart

Most of the time when you click the add to cart button, the cart items and information will always gets updated. Do you have any custom JS code or any php function that alters the cart information? This issue could be caused by a 3rd party plugin. You could try testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

I was able to fix this but it was by reducing the url length, once I reduced the length it worked. Is this a common thing ?

There’s no known issue related to product URL when I checked our tracker. Though a general search pointed me to a this thread which says it might related to ajax. Glad this is now fixed for you.
