Adding another vote for this feature: Post navigation buttons in assigned layout links to posts of unassigned category
Without this feature some sites will have to use an excessive amount of CPTs instead of being able to subdivide by category.

I understand it’s been added to the request list, I’ve seen several other posts about it, just throwing in another vote to see if it can get pushed further up the urgency. This feature, as well as adding the ability to exclude the current post from dynamic content, are really needed for the archive layouts to be used in sites with vast and complex content. I have two clients that need both and the workarounds I have used for the latter aren’t ideal or stable.
I’m working on a string for the former, but it’s slow going as the string doesn’t seem like it can be relational without getting into much more advanced query setups. The only other option would be to create separate post types for each category which is obviously not ideal.
