I worked with a developer who started to create a custom portfolio page template. That didn’t work out, and I want to revert back to the portfolio template that shipped with X Theme originally. Is this possible, and if it is, is it something that can be done without a huge amount of trouble?

Thank you for writing in, you can ask the developer what template he created to overwrite the default portfolio template. More likely it’s a template file on your child theme and/or a custom function on child theme’s functions.php file.
You can remove (but keep a backup) of that custom template/customazation and it’ll fall back automatically to the native theme template.
