As suggested, there is no way to overwrite the portfolio layout template but you can build your own page. I did that but now the hierarchy is gone for the breadcrumbs, is there a way to set the page as the base without setting the page to the portfolio template?

Thanks for writing in! Regretfully there isn’t an option for that. You will have to assign a page as a parent page for the portfolio items so that it will also display in the breadcrumbs.
