Please can advise why I cannot view or edit the portfolio section in cornerstone.

The portfolio is a custom post type and it is recommended not to jam it with Cornerstone elements. But if you are interested in using Cornerstone there kindly go to X > Cornerstone and set it to support Portfolio Post Type:
