Permissions not working right

In Pro -> Setting -> Permissions, my General -> Page permissions are overriding all my individual elements’ permissions. Not only do the “Design Controls” for all elements ONLY show up if they are selected in General -> Page permissions, but they will ALWAYS show up, no matter whether the individual “Design Controls” are checked or not. It’s the exact opposite if the “Design Controls” are not checked in General -> Page: they won’t show up no matter what.

So basically it looks like the individual element permissions only have an effect with the “Show in Library” options - all the options don’t change anything. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Hey @yabwee,

I’m sorry but I’m not sure what the issue is since the General settings are different than the Individual elements.

Would you mind providing more details and screenshots?

Also provide the following info in a Secure Note.

  • WordPress Login URL
  • Admin level username and password

You can find the Secure Note button at the bottom of your posts.

Thanks.

Here a couple screenshots showing the problem:

Configuration 1 - Page->Display Controls YES + Element->Display Controls NO = YES Display controls visible:

Configuration 2 - Page->Display Controls NO + Element->Display Controls YES = NO Display controls visible:

Basically, the Page permissions are the only ones that affect anything. The elements’ permissions do nothing.

My goal is that I could actually control the permissions for each element individually - some elements would have Display Controls shown and others won’t.

Hello @yabwee,

The page controls will take control over the individual element settings. It also matter to the Role of the user.
You will have to set the permission according to the role like Editor.

We would love to know if this has worked for you. Thank you.

This is a little frustrating. I don’t think you understand the problem I’m describing, but I don’t know how to describe it clearer. The individual elements’ permissions (other than “Show in Library”) don’t do anything - they neither turn the permissions on or off. Why are they there?

If I don’t turn the General -> Pages on (like how the Editor role is set as you suggested), then I can’t use Pro at all and that certainly doesn’t solve my problem.

I want to know how I can control the permissions (like “Design Controls”) individually from element to element. How can that be done?

Hey @yabwee,

By saying that:

I think my colleague understood the issue. Regretfully, that is currently the case. But, I’ll post this in our issue tracker so maybe this will be changed or improved in the future as I personally think that if the Page settings have the control, it should remove the individual element settings to avoid confusion.

If our development team will say that element controls should work then this is a bug. I’ve replicated what you’ve described in my test site.

Please stay tuned for updates and we’re sorry for the inconvenience.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. Basically, it’s either a bug or it’s confusing UI. I really do wish I could control the permissions on an element by element basis. I want to provide my clients with only the minimum necessary controls when they edit, but I find that for some elements, the Design Controls is necessary and others aren’t.

In the meantime, I’ll have to figure out how to use role-dependant CSS to hide the controls I don’t want shown.

@yabwee,

Just stay tuned for the updates and thank you for understanding.

Cheers.
