Permalink Settings outside of "Plain" do not work, 404 error

I’m trying to get my page ids to be better (words that are descriptive show up in search). But the Permalink Settings under Settings do not work. If I switch it to Day and Name (/2018/02/20/sample-post/), for example, I get a 404 error. I’m using X Theme. I’m hoping not to have to change server directories. Any fixes?

It seems that the .htaccess is not writable and that’s the reason why you are seeing 404 error message upon changing permalinks settings. Please take a look at following post for possible solution:
