Our website is slow

Hi there,

Our website www.jamesbondclub.ch is running quite slow. I’ve already compressed images and read your article on how to get a better performance. In the meantime I’ve asked the hosting provider if they have an idea what could be the issue. They said that they have the feeling that the JavaScript waits until the whole site is loaded.

I’ve created several websites with your theme and all of them have a good performance even if they have quite a lot of images. May you give me a hint on what to change?

Best Regards,
Christian

Hello Christian,

Thanks for writing in!

I tested the website on Pingdom and the average page load time I around 13sec. There are few suggestions from the test result that can be considered, I am sharing relevant resources that you can take a look:

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks.

Thank you very much for your feedbacks and the links.
The images should already be optimized but I’ll have a look on the other topics.

Is it possible that the page starts building up before everything is loaded? That would make the experience better even if not all of the content is ready from the beginning.

Best,
Christian

Hi @Indiespect!

Let me chime in.

Optimizing images just for image quality (in terms of KB) is a small part of the process of image optimization, if your images are physically too large (in terms of Px).

Your Homepage has 7.80 MB, mostly consisting of 1500X1000px images, while they are in reality displayed in 180 to 300px wide containers.

Excluding all the oversized images, your site would load in under 4 seconds. So the best thing to do is to reduce the size of the images on the site. Maximum size should be 2X of the largest display size (to have sharp images on high-res displays).

Apart from that, you could also add Expire headers to your site. Those are the major ones. Then there is tons of other things to fine-tune. I recommend reading about Speeding up WordPress. There are lot of resources online.

Hey Misho,

Thanks for chiming in and helping out. Your advice is great and there is not much to add.

Hi to both of you,

You are right. I’ll follow your advise step by step. Thanks for the support!

Excuse me I’ve still got one more question. I started to resize one image to 750x500px which is still bigger than needed.
But when I upload it and have the Retina option in the image element clicked it displays way smaller than the column width. Even if I don’t click on the eye icon it is not 100%.

But on the page itself it’s only a container with a width of 340x225px.

May you give me a hint on what I did wrong?

Retina option reduces the image to 50% of its actual width, so it can look sharp on high-res devices. That is why you can upload @X2 size.

If you know that your container’s max display width is actually around 2X narrower than your image’s width, then you can safely turn off the Retina setting. It does the same thing.
