Omitting featured image on random posts

On various random posts I am creating, I would like to stop the featured image automatically appearing in the post.

I believe that for a category I could use:
.single-post .category-categoryname .entry-thumb {
display: none;
}
but this would only work on the individual category.

Could I create a class and then apply that class to the individual posts?

You can use instead:

.single-post  .entry-thumb {
display: none;
}
