I just downloaded the x theme, and set op the ethos magazine demo, but I can’t edit anything in cornerstone.
I tried deactivating all the third party plugins.
NB. I am very much a newbie in webdesign

It is normal to get the message you have mentioned when you edit the homepage of the Ethos Magazine because it is set a the post page which is not editable in Cornerstone.
You may create another page and your should be able to edit it in Cornerstone.
