Hi, I havent edited this website (www.tellasia.org) for a long time and went in to check it and found that the images - while showing up fine in the website - are all just gray boxes in the medid library! Are the images there, and if so how can i get them to show up in the media library? I have updated the theme and plugins but no change. Thanks.

Thanks for writing in! I already tested for a plugin conflict. I even fixed your SSL issue. Still, the issue exists. It leads me to that your images does not exist in your server.
Please check out the example image in the secure note. It does not display anything.

I am not sure either. It is best that you contact your hosting provider. They should be able to answer why some of your images is not showing up.

ok so the hosting was able to get some back, but not my most recent images. I went into File manager and found truly they have entirely disappeared as if deleted. How can that happen - a virus? hacker? They seem to be random, ie not all from any one folder, but they are a date range - all images from around July 2019 back to around mid 2017 are gone.

The only thing I can think that would happen is if you restore an incomplete backup. Which seems to be the case on your Jan 3 backup
Can you check that Dec 4, 2019 backup and see if the missing images are still there. If so, then you can re-upload that images/folder to your current uploads folder.
And besides W3 Total Cache do you have other caching features (internal caching maybe)? Please clear it. I notice that when you directly access the URL of the missing images, it does not return 404 immediately but will wait for a cache even though the W3 Total Cache is already cleared and deactivated.
