Moving from Media Temple to Cloudways

I am thinking about moving my WordPress sites from MT to Cloudways. Currently I have about 50 sites on a VPS at Media Temple. Do you guys think I’ll be okay with the AWS Small tier?

@michaelbourne - you’re a big fan of Cloudways. Any thoughts?

@pbujok - in the meantime, what sort of resource needs do those 50 sites currently have at Media Temple?

For 50 sites, I would assume you would needs at least 2 Core + 2-4GB RAM, so the AWS Medium or AWS CO Large at Cloudways. That said, you could probably also use VULTR2GB or VULTR4GB as they tested almost as fast and as powerful as AWS.

All that being said, you could do a few things that are unique to Cloudways:

  1. Whether you use Vultr or AWS, you can start with the smallest server and scale up as needed. Scaling takes only a few minutes.
  2. You could start both the AWS Small and the Vultr1GB servers and test both to see if they are up to speed. You can even clone Applications (their term for sites) from one server to another.

@pbujok As Kyle asked, what kind of resource usage does your MT VPS currently use?

Personally I like to segment my sites a little more than that. All depends how resource heavy the sites are. But grabbing a couple 2 core vultr servers should be enough for 50 moderate traffic sites. Roy and I ran extensive tests on the stability of Cloudways servers, and AWS and Vultr are both fast and can handle a good amount of server load (thousands of visits per second without issue).

Why the desire to move from MT? Speed? Service?

I’m not sure how accurate the Media Temple charts are, but here are a few screenshots:

You can check out cavalloagency.com for speed. The Media Temple server is the: DV w/SSDs (CentOS 6) - Level 1 More info on the plan is here: https://mediatemple.net/webhosting/vps/hosting/#plans

I’ve noticed a degradation in quality on their WordPress hosting plans, they’ve become unmanageable. The VPS/DV has still been pretty good, but it seems to have its slower times.

Their plans don’t seem to advertise CPU anymore, but I’m on the 2GB ram plan and am able to run these sites pretty well it seems. Any idea why I would need more resources on a AWS/Vultr server?

It’s not so much that you need more resources, sometimes it’s good to have more than enough. My comment was simply “i would rather have 2 servers with 25 sites each, rather than 1 with 50”. Personally for client sites I run them on their own server that fits their needs. Not sure about your specific setup however.

The Cloudways+Vultr 4GB/2core server would do just fine, and it’s $11 cheaper than your current host. You can also use the coupon code xpros for a $20 credit. Why not try the 3 day trial and clone some sites there for testing. See if you like the service. That’s the best way to try a new host.

Thanks Michael,

I have already cloned a few sites and it seems to be running okay. I was just a bit concerned about their support and potentially losing my server along with the backups. Not sure how reliable they are since they’re not a typical web host.

@michaelbourne Sorry I forgot to tag you in the post.

I’ve been using your site as a resource here and there. The Global Blocks for Cornerstone plugin is very helpful for me.

Hi @pbujok I’m Mustaasam from Cloudways. I’m a bit late on Apex forum, can you please let me know how is the experience with Cloudways so far? Is there anything I can help you with?

Cloudways has been a nightmare for us. The move to them was easy, but since moving we have many issues and the abysmal support options never are able to fix things.
I am really wishing I would have went with X hosting or another.

Hi @rglohre

I’ve recently migrated a medium size website I have to Cloudways. I’m interested in knowing what are the issues you had with them? I’m considering migrating more websites so I’d love to know more. I found their support to be not very decent as SiteGround, I’m still testing the water.
