.mkv Video webm standard does not play

Hey there, my video wont start playing in the xtheme
its .mkv and was .mp4 before https://zerotoone.de/

ps. activated the old mp4 video again, but still want to be able to use webM

We use mediaelement library that’s included in WordPress to load videos. And it doesn’t support .mkv videos. Could you please try using .mp4 video and re-check this issue?

so its a theme related issue? Video plays fine in my standard wp media gallery

I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you. I’ve tried inserting a “.mkv” file into a WordPress post/page but it doesn’t work, it doesn’t play in the WordPress media library either. Here you can find a list of all video files formats that are supported by WordPress not inclduing.mkv and the reason could be that this “mkv” codec isn’t supported natively by the modern browsers, those are the ones which are supported currently:

https://caniuse.com/#feat=hevc

Perhaps you are using a browser with an extension/add-on that supports playing “.mkv” files? if that’s true, then you should now that this isn’t the case for all the visitors loading your web page, I recommend sticking with “.mp4” format as it’s widely supported.
