Making an image enlarge in a popup

Hello.

I’d like to make images here and there throughout my site pop up to an enlarged version without opening as a link in a new window. For example, at the link below I include some sketches in a case study that someone may want to have a closer look at.

I’ve tried a content modal, but there’s too little control over the image’s size, alignment, and responsiveness. I don’t want to use the portfolio function because of how I want to structure my page. Any other suggestions?

I recommend to use Essential Grid Plugin and it is bundled with our Theme, in Essential Grid plugin, you can create an image to have a popup/lightbox so that it will enlarge the image when you click the image. Please check out this docs that will help you set up your page.
