Locations + languages

This is probably not the right place to ask about this specific challenge, but maybe someone has an idea or can point me somewhere to look at?

Currently I work on a website that’s targeting different locations (eg. US, EU, DE, CH). While for the US and the EU the content will be in English (with minor differences). The content for DE will be different from the others. Still we want to offer an English translated website to the audience located in Germany. That means, we need to have 1) a location switch (USA, Germany, Switzerland) and 2) for the location “Germany” an extra switch between German and English and for Switzerland a switch between German, Italian and French and maybe later for the US location an extra language switch for eg. English and Spanish.

All the language plugins (including WPML) I found only can switch between languages but do not offer… let’s call it “sub-languages” based on a location choice.

Is that possible or is there a plugin / plugin combination that can accomplish this or would it be a better idea to have different subdomains (for locations) with their own Wordpress installation where then the specific language switch is offered?

Hello Mirco,

Thanks for the very detailed post information. Regretfully we do not have any recommendations for this. WPML is a widely used translation plugin. If this does not fit your needs, you may have to resort to having sub-domains for each language and then maybe do the sub-language level. I am not entirely sure though if this is possible because I am not also expert with site translations.

Cheers.

@ruenel Thanks for your answer. We’re going to do that by using subdomains for each region. If there are more languages per region available, we’re going to use WPML which works perfect with Pro. I just need to build some sort of region switch which shouldn’t be that complicate.

I just hoped for some nice nice idea or workaround how to handle that issue, but the way we’ll do it now will work, even if it means to have 2 or more Wordpress installations to manage (single or via mutlisite) but also gives us the opportunity to granulate work on the content and especially on the SEO.

best regards
Mirco
