I’m needing to better understand the licensing of X. And, I have read this thread. If domain.com is the main site and is using X, and there are staging.domain.com, subdomain2.domain.com, and subdomain3.domain.com, and all of these use individual installations of WP, then each requires a separate X license. Is that correct?

Each X license will let you validate your site in 2 Wordpress Installations.
On Installation for development and other installation for your live site.
