Javascript seems really buggy

Here you can see what I was trying to do. The first two lines of code I was simply trying to see if I could actually target a class or a element on the page and make changes since the code was not working at all. I could not Here you can see that I had the correct id and here you can I see had the correct class name.

Making changes in css to these I had no problem.

This is because the styles generated by the theme will always be prioritized. Please check this tiny hack: How to set an !important css property in javascript
