Is there an easy way to build and add Cornerstone elements within WP's native (Gutenberg) editor?

This may seem like a daft question, but I want to check that I’m not missing something…

When I bought my first X Theme licence some years ago, part of the attraction was that I could use the Cornerstone elements in Posts that I create with the native (now ‘Classic’) WordPress editor.

I didn’t want to use Cornerstone directly for Posts, because many plugins and features add controls to the interface that of course are not visible/accessible while editing with Cornerstone. So I used Cornerstone only for Pages, but made use of the elements through the button in the WordPress editor.

Now we have the Gutenberg WordPress editor, and V2 elements in Cornerstone. This is all great, except that I’ve found the following issues:

Though X Theme stills support the Classic Cornerstone elements and shortcodes (which is great), you state that we shouldn’t use it with new sites. This would be fine for the new e-commerce site I’m planning, except that:

  • V2 elements cannot be used in the WordPress editor at all, so I would have to use the old elements and shortcodes.
  • There doesn’t seem to be a convenient way to build and add the old shortcodes with the new Gutenberg editor (and I don’t want to be forced to use the Classic editor just for this).

So, how am I supposed to use any of the Cornerstone elements, classic or V2, in the Gutenberg editor? Or has Cornerstone in effect become useful only for Pages and not for Posts (because I’d have to sacrifice too many other plugins that are only useful in the native interface)?

Thanks

Eric

Hi Eric,

Regretfully, we don’t have any such options for using V2 elements in the Gutenberg page builder.
V2 elements don’t have a shortcode version but if you wish to display a V2 element using a shortcode,
you need to create a Global Block. See https://theme.co/docs/global-blocks

Hope it helps.

Thanks

Ah. That’s a bit frustrating, especially when I can’t use the ‘classic’ elements in the Gutenberg editor either…

It is a pity that the theme doesn’t much help us to use more of the same visual elements in Posts as it does in Pages — unless we go old school and use the legacy element shortcodes and legacy editor to access the shortcode builder. :frowning:

As great as X Theme is, I’m now starting to question whether or not I really want the overhead of it in my sites if it really only helps me with overall theme and pages and not with Posts — after all, there are other lighter solutions that do help with Posts as well so that there is no need for two entirely separate approaches for posts and pages.

I’ll keep the global blocks in mind, but as I understand them they won’t solve this particular problem; every time I want an element with different content inside it I’d have to create a new global block wouldn’t I? Say, if I want to use the ‘Alert’ element as a ‘note’ or ‘tip’ box with text inside it — I’d need to use the note/tip box visual style repeatedly, but the text would always be different (not ‘global’). So I’d have to have a new global block for every single instance wouldn’t I?

Or is it possible to create a global block as a reusable ‘container’ for consistent visual style while being able to edit the text in every independent instance within Gutenberg?

Hi Eric,

Regretfully, we don’t have an option to reuse the Global Blocks that you are expecting. In the near future, you can create your single post design using Layout Builder.

Ooh, Layout Builder sounds exciting. :+1: Thanks, I’ll keep be interested to see how that develops.

Hello Eric,
Please stay tuned for the succeeding theme versions.
Thanks
