Could this be achieved with Essential Grid or The Grid plugin?

Thanks for writing in! None of the grid plugins has this kind of layout. On the other hand, if you are using a Pro theme, you may be able to replicate this layout by using the Grid element.

Is The Grid able to feed in the Instagram feed? I remember a few months ago there was a problem with the Instagram feed working.

No, unfortunately, the Grid element has no Instagram feed feature. The Essential Grid plugin has no layout that you’re looking for nor The Grid plugin.
That problem with the Instagram feeds a few months ago had been fixed.
I’ve checked the Smash Balloon Social Photo Feed plugin, but it does not offer the layout that you’re after as well.
Please check the other top social media feed plugin here, they might offer that kind of layout.
