Inconsistent Behavior of Left Sidebar

The new left sidebar raises many UX issues of concern. One in particular is what happens when clicking rows. When I click on a row (not the menu indicator), it expands. Even if I don’t want it to and I just want to adjust row properties, it expands revealing all of the elements of the row. OK fine, so then if I click it again, it should collapse…

It does not. Why not? If it’s going to expand on click w/o me asking, shouldn’t it at least do the opposite if I click again? If not, can we NOT have it expand on click then (or only expand when the menu indicator to the left is clicked)? Because you’ve created a UX issue by making the process of moving rows way harder in the left sidebar than it used to be. This is exacerbated by the rows having to be collapsed to move them properly. See how all this adds up to wasted time?

Hello @co50,

Thanks for writing in!

Are you referring to the left sidebar in Cornerstone/Pro Editor?

The only way to collapse it is by clicking on the triangle down (collapse icon) icon. Clicking on the section, row or any element for the first time will set the focus into it. Clicking it the second time will display the text cursor allowing you to rename it. This is why you cannot click on the section, row or any element to collapse it.

Hope this helps.

Right, you’ve reiterated my point.

Clicking once expands the row and shows all the elements. Clicking again should do the opposite - it does not interfere with other functions. Clicking once, and then a second time later on does not rename the row. Double clicking lets you rename the row. Big difference. There is no technological or workflow argument that clicking the row a second time later on should not collapse it.

If I want to set the focus on the row, clicking it - whether it collapses or not, does what I want.

If I want to set the focus on an element within that row, I should click on the element I want to focus on, not the Row. If I click on the row to gain focus but what I really want is to focus on a column or element within the row, I’m an idiot, no? Workflow and UX should not cater to what an idiot might do.

Hello @co50,

We’re sorry to hear that you are having trouble using the new Layout Pane. I tried to replicate the issues you have described and I agree with some point, which is to have the collapsed and uncollapsed functionality to the elements in the Layout Pane when they are clicked.

Thanks for this report and I have already noted this clearly to our issue tracker list so that our developers will be aware and have a look at it so that it will be considered in future development.

Thank you.
