So my question would be: are we indeed at the newer version and can you give me an example of how to make it work?

Your admin page does not exist. Please check.
I’ve tested TOC in my test site and it works inside Cornerstone. See the quick setup demo here. Just note that the TOC displays inline so if you add an element inside the column, they will display side by side. To put elements below the table of contents, you need to put contents in another row.
Also, type in <!--nextpage--> and don’t copy and paste from the forum because chances are, you’ll get a pretty character like this ‹!--nextpage--› (notice the difference in angle brackets) which will display the tag rather than work as intended.
