Ideal image size for header / hero in slider revolution to support HD / retina etc

Dear team,

I’m creating my website and using rev slider for the headers / hero images to appear below masthead.

What would be the ideal image size to support HD / retina etc?

Also, for all the other images on the website. Are there any rules or guidelines on this? How to optimize image size for page load but also support HD at the same time.

I understood there’s some plugins to optimize sizes and support these, any you could recommend to work on Pro?
