When viewed in cornerstone the code is properly applied to the text and working well, but on the actual webpage the text in unaffected and you can see the html. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for writing in!
When you are inserting a custom html code in the text element, please make sure that you are in the Code View.
Adding it in Rich Text format will just convert all the html tags into a special characters and then those tags will display in the live page.
