How to stop attack

My website was running very slow. I contacted the hosting company who sent this message;

“Yes CPU load was high due to this application uffwvsshes
You have around 44958 /xmlrpc.php request for today on this application
Yes, it was an attack, I have blocked the xmlrpc.php URL from the .htaccess”

Does anyone know what the app uffwvsshes is? and how can I prevent this from happening in the future?
