How to move from multiple Wordpress sites on subdirectories to a single Wordpress site without losing searchability?

Current setup:

  • A simple HTML landing page at the main URL with no subdirectory; this is the “headquarters” page for the XYZ Company, which links to 4 separate locations XYZ North, XYZ South, etc.

  • Googling “xyz” gets me to headquarters landing page above as desired.

  • XYZ North has its own Wordpress installation living at the /north subdirectory from the main domain; XYZ South has its own Wordpress installation living the /south subdirectory from the main domain; and so on

  • Googling “xyz north” gets me to /north subdirectory as desired, and automatically also shows site links specific to XYZ North, e.g. /north/prices, etc.; likewise when Googling “xyz south” Google shows /south with site links /south/prices etc.

  • Because there are 4 separate Wordpress installations, we have to manually copy content 4 times even when there is no need for location-specific content, which is cumbersome. Likewise if we change templates etc. we have to change them four times, also cumbersome and inefficient to maintain.

Desired setup:

  • Have a single Wordpress installation (perhaps a multisite?) with “sub-homepages” at /north, /south, etc.
  • Keep the current Google search results, i.e. searching for “xyz” goes to the root URL but searching for “xyz north” goes to /north with site links specific to the North location (like /north/prices etc.)

Is this possible? If so, any tips to make it happen or things to watch out for to avoid messing up the Google results? Thanks!

Note: I’m currently using X Theme for one of the four existing WordPress sites. One of my goals is to unify all four location “sub-sites” with the same X Theme, including all my theme customizations etc. without having to make the customizations multiple times.

Hi @happydogsnyc,

Thank you for writing in, yes you can make just one site and have the other 4 locations Company as pages, and the home is the main XYZ company, then utilize the Global Blocks feature if you need a repetitive section(s) that will be used throughout the site.

Unfortunately, we are not the right person to speak about what would be the impact of this in SEO, please consult an SEO specialist.

Cheers!
