Just purchased and downloaded theme x. I am trying to upload the theme to my shopify but it doenst work. error zip does not contain a valid theme: missing template “layout/theme.liquid”

Thanks for writing in! Are you trying to use X theme on shopify? Or are you wanting to use X theme + WordPress + have an online store?
X theme is a WordPress theme. The X theme will not work out of the box when you use it on Shopify. The first option would take a lot of work and ultimately wouldn’t be worth it.
The second option is a very achievable option if you like the style of the X theme. You’ll need to download the WooCommerce plugin which once step up will allow ecommerce functionality on your site.
