How to Do Linear Mask

Your big 6.x update talked about and showed an example of a linear gradient that made lower text easier to read on a contrasty image, but nowhere could I find instructions on how to actually do this using the new Mask tool.

When I tried it, I get what I want except the mask is white. I can’t figure out how to change it to black or a darker color…

Check out this element structure:

The Mask effect is applied to the Figure element and the red background color is applied to the Article element.
