How to add a child theme after modifications

Hi Support,

I have a small issue in that when we built a recent website we made the changes to the main parent X theme files and neglected to install a child theme.

My question: Is it possible to install and use a child theme after we have changed the main theme so i can update the main theme without losing changes and if so what would be the process for this? - ideally i would like to be able to copy over the changes from the main theme to the child theme so i dont have to repeat all of the work but i dont know if this is possible?

Hi Tony,

If the changes you have done on the site so far are just on the Theme Options, everything should remain the same even after you install and activate the child theme. Also, even if you have done some changes to them actual theme files, nothing will also change even if you install and activate the child theme. However, if you have edited the theme files of the parent theme directly, if you will not copy the changes over to the child theme those changes will disappear when you update the theme.

I suggest that you setup a staging site which is a duplicate copy of the live site then make the testing from there so that the live site will not be affected while you’re doing some test.
