How can I create multiple "practice themes"?

Apologies if my question isn’t too clear. I have a domain and I’m happy with the theme I’ve crafted however I wanted to know if it was possible to create multiple templates without affecting the actual site? For example say my site is about dogs and I want to create a website about car repair, can I design a theme/template without affecting the actual site?

Essentially I’d like to create themes and just store them. I find that I learn best my practicing and would love to see if this is possible.

Hi,

You can create multiple subdirectories in your site that has separate wordpress installation and db.
Then have it in maintenance mode so it is not visible to public.

You can use this third party plugin in creating your subdirectories.

Hmm okay. I realize if I wanted to add x theme to a subdomain (sub.mywebsite.com) I’d need a new license, however how would I go about installing a totally different variation to my website using the same domain (mywebsite.com/variation3)?
