Help needed on updating Pro

I have tried to update Pro to version 1.2.7. I am also using a child theme. When I ask for help, support people keep linking articles to theme installation, but since this is a parent theme the instructions don’t really fit the scenario. The site is functional, but I don’t know how to tell if the update has been done properly and where to look to confirm that the Pro version is now the correct one.

I went to cPanel, Wp, themes, uploaded the zip file, unzipped, and can see that some things are dated today. I really just need someone to please double check that I’ve done this properly and that the parent theme is updated to the correct version.

As another aside, I did a bunch of work on my footer last night and when I woke up this morning, the footer is no where to be found. (This was happening prior to the update) When I go to the footer editor, all the containers are still there, but nothing at all is visible. Can you help?

Hi There,

Thank you for writing in, please navigate to Appearance > Themes and click the theme that you want to check and that should tell you what version the theme is.

Please navigate to page Settings > General and change your Page Template

It seems your home page is using a Blank - No Container | Header, No Footer template, that is why the page is not showing a footer.

Cheers!

Yes! Thank you for the help on the footer. And yes, that is the right site.

It looks as though the theme panel is still reflecting 1.2.6. Could I get some assistance in getting the 1.2.7 installed properly?

Hello There,

It seems that you have renamed the folders. Please login to your ftp and go to the themes folder, wp-content/themes/. You must renamed Pro to just pro and Pro-Child to just simply pro-child. They must be smaller case to avoid any issues. After you renamed the folder names, you should be able to update the theme without any problems.

Please let us know how it goes.

I did what you said, but now it is really messed up. It said it couldn’t find the file. Now the child theme isn’t even listed and it has pushed everything to a completely different theme! Please help!!

@RueNel Everything is broken! The child theme is not listed in the WP interface anymore. I think they were already caps and when I changed them, everything changed… Please help get this back to how it was!

@RueNel I put everything back to caps and it came back. Whew! How do I do this update? Could you please just help me?

Hello There,

The original .zip files is in smaller caps. You must have changed it or have uploaded the wrong zip file. To resolve this, please follow these steps.
1.) Please deactivate SG cache plugin.
2.) Please activate “Under Construction” plugin.
3.) Please switch the theme to Twenty Seventeen.
4.) Please delete Pro and Pro Child theme complete.
5.) Please install Pro and Child theme again and make sure that you are uploading the “pro.zip” and “pro-child.zip” files.

You can reactivate other plugins afterwards.

Please let us know how it goes.

Hey There,

Please follow the steps in my previous reply.

Hope this helps. Kindly let us know.

Delete the child theme? I’ve done a lot of work on the theme already. Won’t deleting it wipe all the work?

Hello There,

If you have done some customizations, with the child theme, please do this steps.
1.) Please deactivate SG cache plugin.
2.) Please activate “Under Construction” plugin.
3.) Please switch the theme to Twenty Seventeen.
4.) Please delete Pro theme completely.
5.) Please rename the folder of the child theme from “Pro-Child” to just simply “pro-child”.
6.) Please install Pro theme again and make sure that you are uploading the “pro.zip”.
7.) After installing Pro theme correctly, you will have to activate the child themes so that all your modifications will take effect.

Hope this helps. Please let us know how it goes.

Sorry, it took more than 24 hours to get that theme installed in the first place. I paid on my web host to have the Pro theme installed because I had issues with it and it was worth the money over my time in that case. The last thing I want to do is delete what I paid to have done and installed and then re-do all of it myself. I am not skilled on using the backside of the site, clearly.

I’m also concerned that you told me to delete the child theme before knowing whether I’d done work on the site. Does the child theme need an update too? This is getting more confusing.

Hello There,

The child theme holds your custom modifications. It will not be updated and there will be no updates for it. So if there are several modifications made already, you are not required to delete anything. Sorry for the confusions. I will change the steps and this time, no deleting of anything. Please do this instead:
1.) Please deactivate SG cache plugin.
2.) Please activate “Under Construction” plugin.
3.) Please switch the theme to Twenty Seventeen.
4.) Please login to your ftp, browse to the themes folder and renamed the “Pro” to simply just “pro”.
5.) Please rename the folder of the child theme from “Pro-Child” to just simply “pro-child”.
6.) After renaming everything the folder names back to its original names and small case, you can switch back to the child theme and test your site.

If something is not right, you will have to clear your plugin cache because you have installed a caching plugin.

Please let us know how it goes.

Ok… well… I did that, which were the same directions from before. And I got the same result. The child theme no longer appears at all and you can see the broken theme info at the bottom of the screen. So I’m back to square one - site on the wrong theme and no child present, with a broken parent.

Also, if the caching plug in is deactivated what cache are you referring to?

So I can’t switch back to the child theme because it isn’t there.

Hello There,

That happens because your child theme is now pointing to the Pro theme which is using the theme with the uppercase folder name. I already have updated it and made these changes:

/*

Theme Name: Pro – Child Theme
Theme URI: http://theme.co/pro/
Author: Themeco
Author URI: http://theme.co/
Description: Make all of your modifications to Pro in this child theme.
Version: 1.0.0
Template: pro

*/

The changed was from Template: Pro to Template: pro.

Please check your site again.

The Pro screen still says version 1.2.6 instead of 1.2.7. The margins on the content are off the screen.

Hello There,

I have made the changes and I also updated the Pro theme to version 1.2.7.
Please clear your plugin cache again and test your site again.

Please let us know how it goes.

What plug in cache? it is still disactivated

Hello There,

Your margins are off the screen because you have set a negative margin in your section:

Please edit your page and set your margins to at least zero.
