please take a look on this layout:
I want to setup a portfolio, which worked well so far. Only thing are categories, when I click on the topic on the top, for example tabletop or living, pictures not in that category should become transparent (let’s say 50%). This seems too tricky for me. How can I achieve that?

Those are static content, what you may want to try is Essential Grid plugin which is bundled in our theme. You may check its documentation here https://essential.themepunch.com/
You can achieve masonry layout like portfolio and add your own filters.
