I want to increase pagespeed, is there an option to chanage the Google fonts mechanism to Webfont Loader (https://github.com/typekit/webfontloader)? Or just use a custom hook/action to add it manually (maybe without needing a full child theme)?

Thanks for writing in.
Google fonts are part of the core, the CSS and other settings are auto-generated. You can’t just replace it unless you’ll do customization which we don’t support.
So yes, you can only apply your font through custom CSS.
