I am having trouble adding the google forwarding tag script with x theme. I tried to add the script in the header .php files but it broke my site :confused: any ideas what may be going wrong?

Let me suggest you rather simpler solution to add scripts in header. Kindly have a look at Header and Footer Scripts plugin. Using this plugin you can easily add scripts in header without much of hassle.
