Get featured image without custom meta for Essential Grid skin

I want to be able to use something like %image_url% to get the featured image for a post for my Essential Grid skin. Is there a way to without creating a new custom meta field to do so? Also, is something like this already available… where I’m not using the correct call?

It’s not readily available, you will have to create a new meta field.
