Font Awesome Pro icons usage documentation

Hello!

Your docs do not contain any documentation regarding Font Awesome icons usage beside troubleshooting and icon element.

All I found using this forum’s subpar search functionality is same questions from 2019 (sic!). It’s mid-2022! How long it would take one to add article to official doc.

So to eliminate all confusion:

  • What exact version of Font Awesome integrated in Pro version of your theme/plugin? I’ve seen messages here about Pro version of Font Awesome, but it your builder lack duo-tone version even in UI icon selector. So there’s that. This question need an answer.

  • If you include Font Awesome Pro version where’s Duo-tones one?

  • If it’s some custom assembly based on Free / Pro versions of Font Awesome–what was the reasoning for that Frankenstein baby?

  • Do you have any “SLA” for support/updates on those icons (btw: Font Awesome 6 stable is out for 6(!) months) or it’s “we don’t know anything and release / update when feel like it”?

  • When do you add proper documentation on how to use Font Awesome icons outside of Icon element: how exactly to use it shortcodes / or html? You don’t use standard so that’s a massive confusion without docs.

I can of course use Font Awesome 5/6 Pro icons using JS/SVG kit or manually add it as fonts but it would be nice to use native UI icon pickers and avoid potential conflicts in code.

Thanks for quick reply!

Hello @skripkin,

Thanks for writing in!

  • What exact version of Font Awesome integrated in Pro version of your theme/plugin?
-> With the latest release of the theme, we are using the Font Awesome 5.

  • If you include Font Awesome Pro version where’s Duo-tones one?
-> The duotone icons and some of the newer features in Font Awesome 6 is not yet available in out UI selectors.

  • If it’s some custom assembly based on Free / Pro versions of Font Awesome–what was the reasoning for that Frankenstein baby?
-> We have our own current system we developed ourselves to display the Font Awesome icons. This is to avoid any conflict to any plugin that uses the Font Awesome Icons as well.

  • Do you have any “SLA” for support/updates on those icons (btw: Font Awesome 6 stable is out for 6(!) months) or it’s “we don’t know anything and release / update when feel like it”?
-> Our developers has already made aware of the new version. We do not have an ETA for the theme release version with the updated Font Awesome Icons.

  • When do you add proper documentation on how to use Font Awesome icons outside of Icon element: how exactly to use it shortcodes / or html? You don’t use standard so that’s a massive confusion without docs.
-> We do not have any intention to use Font Awesome Icons via shortcodes or HTML. There is already a step by step guide for that. You may also use 3rd party plugins. You will have to use the Icon element in the builder if you want to display an icon while using Cornerstone.

Best Regards.

Thanks for reply!

That’s I’m aware of ways to integrate Font Awesome’s icons into web.
I’m trying to minimize overlapping code as well as re-use as much as possible using your builder.
I used forum search and found some [x-icon …] shortcuts for icons. You do have some weird undocumented websites shared by your staff here and there on forum, like this: https://demo.theme.co/icon-1/shortcodes/icons/ (surprise: shortcodes).

Let me add to my question 2 more:

  1. You’re offering Font Awesome’s version 5 of Solid, Regular, Light, Brands icons (no Duotone) and the only recommended way of using them is through Icon element. There’s no other ways of using it and if I want Duotones, version 6 or anything else you suggest me to use direct Font Awesome integration with Wordpress. Correct?

  2. Is there a proper supported way to add custom icon sets to your icon element’s picker? I found this page https://theme.co/docs/standalone-cornerstone#registering-element-icons , again using search. Page is not exposed in navigation menu but not marked as deprecated. I believe this method is for adding your own icons to your library (wherever Icon picker is present).
Is it supported way? If so on that page link to other part of the guide which is broken. I suspect that part supposed to explain how to add categories to the Icon picker selector (along with built-in ones such as Solid, Light, etc).
This is the line: At this point, my-extension can now be assigned as an icon_group. Click here for more information. Unfortunately clicking on Here only shows Laravel’s default page not found message. So if it’s correct method could you shed some light / give me correct instructions on how to integrate my own icons.

Thank you in advance!

Hello @skripkin,

The icon [x-icon …] shortcode is actually part of the X shortcodes plugin which was already deprecated. This is was way before Cornerstone when we had the X theme and X shortcode combination. If you want to use this legacy shortcode, you can still use it as this still works with the Cornerstone builder.

1.)Regretfully, Duotone icons is currently not available in the theme. We already have added it in our enhancements list and we do not have an ETA of when it can be release.

2.) Yes, you are correct. The documentation page is for adding your own icons to your library. If you want to create your own custom element, please use this documentation instead:

Best Regards.

  1. Thanks.

  2. I most likely misread this. I thought that there’s an official way of adding some custom icons to your icon picker. And second “not found” link is for exposing new group of icons to standard Themeco’s (Cornerstone’s) icon picker dialog. My bad. It’s if one want to create custom element and use their own icons in that Element.

Thanks.

No problem. Please feel free to create another thread if you need any further information.

Cheers.
