I tried re-saving permalink, and tried using the “fix my feed” plugin but no difference. Oddly the same feed is working fine on my staging site.

Thanks for writing in! Please be advised that X theme does not modify the RSS feed. We simply rely on the default WordPress RSS feed. There may be a 3rd party plugin that created the issue. You could try testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.
