Error Message 500 only on pages with subpages

Hi Support Team,

I am experiencing 500 Error Messages on the website I created for my client. These pages do not load.
I tried increasing the memory limit in wp-config.php wich brought up one mor page, but this didn’t seem to solve the genral problem. It occures only on pages that have sub-pages. Some load after a few secons, some don’t load at all. The hoster already checked out the issue and said that the problem is on my end. Could it have something to do with the navbar element on these pages? This is the only thing that is different from the other pages, that seem to load fine.

Could you check the site?
Thanks!

Hi @blueprint,

I’ve already tried:

  • Turn off all the 3rd party plugins
  • Switch to parent theme

But those pages are still working.

Would you mind providing us with your FTP account so we can check your setup?

Thank you so much!

sure, here you go:

Hi @blueprint,

The issue is related to this settings:

You have different URL set on those options.
If you access the page/subpage using Wordpress Address URL + subpage name, it loads. Try to set the same URL on those options.

Ok. Than I have a problem. The Wordpress installation is in onother directory. And I do not want this directory to be shown in the url of the website. Is there a workaround?

It is strange, because it used to work some weeks ago…

I tried what you said - using the full Wordpress Adress (where the WP installation lies) + /page/subpagename, but got 404 page?

Hi @blueprint,

I am sure you will understand that this is not related to our product and our theme does not have anything to do with the setup that you have on your WordPress installation. You can test the case by changing the theme to completely other one and you will see the problem anyway.

If you set up your website to have different directpry then you did change some HTACCESS code to achieve that functionality. Now by simply changing the URL in the settings, you will not have the problem fixed. You will need to revert back your changes and also go to WordPress Dashboard > Settings> Permalinks and save the options there to flush the Permalink cache.

Actually, we are not the correct people to help you out on this matter and you need to contact the person who set up the site for you and your hosting service provider.

Thank you for your understanding.

I understand what you mean. But I’m not sure that the different URL’s are the problem: How is it possible that some of the subpages DO work, others don’t . That suggests that the URL’s are not interferring in those working pages. Also the site was working for some months and now it doesn’t. I didn’t change any URL during that time.

Lely’s erlier suggestion with the path of the Wordpress Adress also did not work on my end…

Hello @blueprint,

I cannot access your FTP. it seems that the login details are incorrect.

Do you know what the Error 500 all about? We need to find out what is the cause of it. Would you mind enabling the debug mode? You can do this by opening wp-config.php and adding

define('WP_DEBUG', true);

/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

When you revisit the page, you should have some error output describing the issue in more detail.

Please let us know how it goes.

Hi guys, Sorry I think I messed up badly. Tried to turn up DEBUG mode and obviously messed somithing up in the wp config file. the error message is “Upstream server failed”. I’ll send you the accsess to FTP again. I hope you can help me out!

Hello @blueprint,

When you visit the mentioned pages, it will now display:

Upstream server failed

This error has something to do with your server configuration. We do not have control over this. Please contact your hosting provider instead and ask for further assistance. They should be able to adjust your server to resolve this issue.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks, I will. Where you able to check my wp-config.php file for any syntax error?;I did not change anything but paste in the DEBUG line you provided and than delete it again. But maybe somehow some mistake happened. Since I do not now to code, I would not be anle to identify any syntax errors…

Hi @blueprint,

I checked your wp-config.php file and can confirm that there are no syntax errors.

Thanks

Thank you very much. My hostee solved the problem, tthevsite is back online. Hope you can help me solve my probkembwith the 500 Error Message now.

Hello There,

Please try to save a backup of you site first. Then switch to default theme. Check the issue again if it still there. If it’s gone, it is likely an issue with Wordpress setup and as suggested with Christopher you need to consult the developer who set it up.

I also tried to access you site hosting via FTP but I can’t see your error log.

Please check this article as guide.

Ok, thank you. I’ll try doing that. What can I do in case the problem is gone when I swich to another theme?

What is an errorlog and how can I provide it for you?

You’re always welcome @blueprint,

Please ask your hosting provider for the error log and server log from the hosting provider. It can give us more information on what is happening on those page.
