Does upgrading a theme delete files?

I had created custom templates in wordpress and now i have files missing and do not know how they got removed?

Thanks for writing to us.

In case you have upgraded the theme from X to Pro theme, in that case, all of your customization or custom template would be there on the X theme directory and your upgraded active theme would be on the Pro theme so it would not browse the X theme custom templates on the Pro theme. I would suggest you please use the child theme of Pro and then customize it as your need.

i don’t think it was from X, the files are just gone

If you were working on a staging area, you may revert to the previous state prior to the update you did so that you can get those files back. You may also ask your hosting provider to revert back the changes. This is the fastest way to get those files back. Normally, files don’t get deleted. Unless you are updating the theme or plugin where WordPress will compare the files and may delete the old plugin/theme folder and replace it with the latest update.
