Dissapearing sticky header bar

Can you help figure out why a sticky header bar dissapears once in a while.

It is not systematic, but I can reproduce it best as follows:

  • open the home page of https://harvardhistory.org, the sticky bar is the navigaion one with Home, Events,…
  • scroll down, the bar sticks to the top as it should,
  • scroll further down and click on one of the “More…” buttons
  • once the More page is open, click on the back-button in the browser
  • the home page is back, but without the sticky nav bar, it has completely dissapeared

Here is a video capture showing the problem: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mYbfp_DcWEd5hYuhD9Lra6MjOdsIIIM3/view?usp=sharing

I have tried changing the Trigger Offset and the Shrink amount and I have checked several browsers.
I don’t know for sure when this started happening, but I believe it was around the time of the WordPress 6.1 update.

Hey Patrick,

Thanks for reaching out!

It is behaving that way because the x-bar-fixedclass still remains when you go back to the homepage and doesn’t remove the class. I suspect that this is a caching glitch, web browsers often cache certain elements of a webpage to improve performance. The homepage is cached, clicking a link might load the cached version without making a fresh request to the server. When you try to go back using the browser’s “Go back” button, it simply displays the cached version instead of reloading the homepage.

There will be an upcoming update for the sticky header and let us see if it fixed your issue. Just also want to let you know that I already forwarded your case to our developer. You can check the latest updates from time to time here.

Hope that helps and please stay tuned.

Thank you. Note that this website had the same headers since a couple of years and it worked fine. Something must have changed. I hope you can fix it quickly as it is very annoying.
Will keep an eye on the next releases!
Cheers,
Patrick
