Displaying an image instead of the first frame, if autoplay doesn't work

Hi there,

I have a video on my homepage that is set to autoplay. However, I understand that due to the nature of this function that some devices/browsers will not trigger autoplay regardless of the settings.

I have added a video poster of the first frame, which I want to display when the video doesn’t autoplay, so my clients know to click the image to begin playback. However, this image does not display. Instead, the first frame of the video is there, just still. This does not give any implication that the still image is a video.

My question is this - is there a way to display an image instead of the first frame when the device/browser fails to autoplay? (I have an image which was made in Photoshop, it’s just the first frame with the word ‘click’ on it)

Please let me know!

(Autoplay functions normally on Samsung, Huawaei and Chrome. Video does not autoplay on iPhone, Firefox or Safari).

Many thanks!

Hello JayD,

Thanks for writing in!

Is there a way to display an image instead of the first frame when the device/browser fails to autoplay?

  • Actually, the main purpose of the poster image is to replace the video element when autoplay is disabled. I can see that you already have added the poster image and it is working as it is intended to be.

This is how your site looks like in mobile device when the video is not playing.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

That’s great! It wasn’t showing last night but seems to be this morning.
However still not showing poster image on Firefox - any idea why this might be?

Hey Jayd,

I see the issue in Firefox but only in your site. I’ve tested the latest version of Pro in all my test sites and if the connection is slow, the poster image shows up and then the video autoplays when it’s loaded. This means that there’s something affecting the video player in your site.

Would you mind updating Pro to the latest version? I see you’re using a very old version v1.2.7. Also disable the page loading effect in your site to temporarily check if it’s affecting the behavior of the video player? If it persists, try testing for a plugin conflict by temporarily deactivating all third-party plugins.

Thanks.
