Display issues after moving site from Production to Staging

Hello,
I can’t seem to find any info on the forums about this so I am posting it here. I am using wpengine hosting. I need to update my site’s design so I moved the site from production to a staging area to do the updates. But the site does not display correctly on the staging site after the migration. The styles seem to be all off and the header and footer are loaded all weird. Any advice on what could be the issue? I have already researched cache issues with wpengine support but doesn’t seem to be an issue. Thanks!

Hey There,

Since WPEngine is providing the staging functionality and staging means copying the live site to a staging environment this is something hosting related. Only WPEngine can check their internal logs to see when and if the cloning goes wrong. If the live site is working correctly the copy of that site (the staging) should be an exact replication. The only reason for this to not happen is when there is a hosting / script issue with the staging functionality so I recommend getting back with WPEngine about this as we simply don’t have the access and information to be able to assist with this.

Ok thanks, I will relay this message to WpEngine support. I wanted to mention one other caveat as maybe you would know something.

While the website displays incorrectly on the front-end page, looking at the page within the pro page-builder or within the theme options, some things are displayed correctly. It is not perfect, but more things display correctly. Does this help you pinpoint anything?

Hi Rubin. It looks like the display issues resulted after an upgrade from 5.2.3 to 5.2.4. So it seems to be that Pro has problems with the new WP version.

Hello @tim1fitzgerald,

You could be experiencing some caching issues since the issue happens after the updates. I can see that you have LazyLoad and WP Rocket installed both in your staging and production site. After doing the updates, always remember to clear all caches since you are using WP Rocket so that the code from the latest release is always in use. This will help you to avoid any potential errors. And please clear your browser cache too. You may use private browsing mode in testing your site to make sure that you are viewing the latest codes from the updates and not the cached version in your browser.

Hope this helps.

Hi RueNel. Thanks for your comments. We actually discovered what happened. The site was automatically updated to the latest release of WP on Saturday (from 5.2.3 to 5.2.4). Transferred from production to staging on Monday. The staging site was displaying incorrectly but the live site was fine. After a few days, the live site started to have the same display problems as the staging site out of nowhere!

Finally discovered the reason was pretty simple. After reverting to an install from before the latest WP upgrade, the site displayed fine. This led us to discover that the Pro theme version had not been updated in a long time; the automatic updates were not working for some reason. After updating to the latest version of Pro theme, the site worked again! What we think happened was the staging site has fresh cache so it was displaying the site with the errors due to the old version of Pro. The live site was still showing a cached version of the site from before the upgrade, that is why there was no errors until the cache was refreshed. Spent a lot of time confused!!

So the moral of the story for anyone is, check to make sure the automatic updates are working and your version is up to date!

Hello Tim,

Thanks a lot for taking the time out and explaining the issue that was happening in detail. We are glad that you found the solution.
