Decreasing load time... Typekit slowing it down?

Hi all,

I’ve done a few searches and gone through previous posts wondering if anyone has addressed this - if I missed something please let me know :slight_smile:

I’ve spent a few days trying to optimize my client’s site load time, because it was incredibly slow. I removed all unnecessary plugins and themes, use Cloudflare CDN + caching, have an image optimizer, added caching headers, added gzip headers.

I really wanted to blame the server itself (Godaddy economy) but a test run on bitcatcha.com reports it as very fast.

In the site speed tools I’ve run (GTmetrix + pingdom) they report Typekit loading a bunch of different times, and for a long time. I’m wondering if there’s a better way I should be loading Typekit in rather than how the theme does it? If anyone has further suggestions for me I would very much appreciate them!

Hi Roxanne,

Thank you for writing in, please do a test try removing the Adobe Fonts from the Font Manager and see if that resolves the issue. If not, then Adobe Fonts is not the issue. It could be a conflict between your caching and optimizer features. Please try using only Cloudflare and deactivate the other.

Hi @friech,

Yes, by removing the Adobe Fonts it went from 3.97s load time to 2.48s (pingdom)/ 5.7s to 4.7s (gtmetrix).

If you are using Adode fonts in your site, these articles should be able to help you optimize the loading of the Adobe fonts.

Hi @ruenel,

As I am using the X Theme Font Manager to load in Typekit, how can I take advantage of different preloading factors? As mentioned, I am already using caching; and I have selected limited, necessary fonts. I do not see a way to adjust the Font Manager’s method of loading Typekit.

Would you mind to clarify where did you get that report? I have checked https://shalayoga.ca on https://gtmetrix.com/ and pingdom and I don’t see any issue regarding the Font.

This result is even faster compare to https://www.bitcatcha.com/

And as you can see it only loads font once per instance. So I’m not sure what does it mean loading a bunch of different times on your report.

I advise that you focus on other issues first, Instead of the font.
