Customizing Navbar Hover Hitbox

I’ve added a border around one of my navbar items. I also have a hover effect where both the text and border change color. However, the hitbox for the border’s hover effect is much smaller than the navbar item. How can I expand the hitbox for the border’s hover effect to match the navbar item?

Edit: Never mind! Figured out the mistake in my code: I used

#id a:hover {}

when I needed to use

#id a:hover > span {}
