Custom Post type category not displaying

I have created a post type with CPT UI and have added a category taxonomy to it. Just a simple category situation… nothing fancy. The category archive page displays the posts just as expected but the metadata is incomplete in that the category is not shown. Regular blog posts display this data like this:

“Post Date / Category Name(s) / Leave a Comment”

On my new CPT, the “Category Name(s)” portion is blank. Now, I understand that you could not anticipate all the possible names of CPT or their associated Taxonomies I could have created and therefore could not support the display of this data by default. But I do know the name(s) of what I’ve done and would like a way to add support for the display of the categories in question.

I have been looking around on the forums and trying to come up with something to do with the x_integrity_entry_meta() function in my child functions.php but have been unsuccessful so far. Can you provide any guidance on how to achieve displaying the categories for my CPT please?

The name of the custom post type is “pwc” and the category slug is “pwc_category”. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @simeoned,

Thanks for reaching out.

That would require custom coding as the theme only provides post meta for known post types (standard post type and post type that came with it). Though, you can implement is similar to existing code from x_integrity_entry_meta() like this

if ( get_post_type() == 'x-portfolio' ) {
      if ( has_term( '', 'portfolio-category', NULL ) ) {
        $categories        = get_the_terms( get_the_ID(), 'portfolio-category' );
        $separator         = ', ';
        $categories_output = '';
        foreach ( $categories as $category ) {
          $categories_output .= '<a href="'
                              . get_term_link( $category->slug, 'portfolio-category' )
                              . '" title="'
                              . esc_attr( sprintf( __( "View all posts in: &ldquo;%s&rdquo;", '__x__' ), $category->name ) )
                              . '"><i class="x-icon-bookmark" data-x-icon-s="&#xf02e;"></i> '
                              . $category->name
                              . '</a>'
                              . $separator;
        }

        $categories_list = sprintf( '<span>%s</span>',
          trim( $categories_output, $separator )
        );
      } else {
        $categories_list = '';
      }
    }

to something like this

if ( get_post_type() == 'pwc' ) {
      if ( has_term( '', 'pwc_category', NULL ) ) {
        $categories        = get_the_terms( get_the_ID(), 'pwc_category' );
        $separator         = ', ';
        $categories_output = '';
        foreach ( $categories as $category ) {
          $categories_output .= '<a href="'
                              . get_term_link( $category->slug, 'pwc_category' )
                              . '" title="'
                              . esc_attr( sprintf( __( "View all posts in: &ldquo;%s&rdquo;", '__x__' ), $category->name ) )
                              . '"><i class="x-icon-bookmark" data-x-icon-s="&#xf02e;"></i> '
                              . $category->name
                              . '</a>'
                              . $separator;
        }

        $categories_list = sprintf( '<span>%s</span>',
          trim( $categories_output, $separator )
        );
      } else {
        $categories_list = '';
      }
    }

And this would be the complete code,

 function x_integrity_entry_meta() {

    //
    // Author.
    //

    $author = sprintf( '<span><i class="x-icon-pencil" data-x-icon-s="&#xf303;"></i> %s</span>',
      get_the_author()
    );

    //
    // Date.
    //

    $date = sprintf( '<span><time class="entry-date" datetime="%1$s"><i class="x-icon-calendar" data-x-icon-s="&#xf073;"></i> %2$s</time></span>',
      esc_attr( get_the_date( 'c' ) ),
      esc_html( get_the_date() )
    );

    //
    // Categories.
    //

    if ( get_post_type() == 'x-portfolio' ) {
      if ( has_term( '', 'portfolio-category', NULL ) ) {
        $categories        = get_the_terms( get_the_ID(), 'portfolio-category' );
        $separator         = ', ';
        $categories_output = '';
        foreach ( $categories as $category ) {
          $categories_output .= '<a href="'
                              . get_term_link( $category->slug, 'portfolio-category' )
                              . '" title="'
                              . esc_attr( sprintf( __( "View all posts in: &ldquo;%s&rdquo;", '__x__' ), $category->name ) )
                              . '"><i class="x-icon-bookmark" data-x-icon-s="&#xf02e;"></i> '
                              . $category->name
                              . '</a>'
                              . $separator;
        }

Yes, I completely understand. I am the developer… just needed to get my arms around what methodology should be employed. Thank you for unpacking this a little with me here. This works very well out of the box and I will use this is a basis for further development moving forward.

Thanks again!

On behalf of my colleague @Rad, you’re welcome :slight_smile:
