Cornerstone won't load. Grey Screen of Death

I’ve deactivated all plugins and no change. I restored back to the last known working version (day before yesterday) and it’s still not working. Since I spent hours making changes yesterday, I decided to roll back forward from the most recent backup.

No Uh Oh, just a grey screen.

I worked on the site yesterday, everything was working fine after updating the plugins, theme, and to WordPress 6.7. I replaced Meta Slider with modern sliders>autoplay progress slider that I imported from another site. When I uploaded it, I received an error message saying uh oh (the images were not uploaded), but other than that, I was able to add new images and when I finished up last night everything was working fine.

Today, I logged in to change one of the slider images and Cornerstone wouldn’t load. Here’s what I see (see screenshot below). It doesn’t matter which option I choose – Theme Options, Templates, Settings – nothing changes.

Here’s the error I see in the console when accessing cornerstone in the back end.

I also can’t access anything via the regular “edit” page screen. It’s a light grey screen when I open that and here is the console error:

The default theme (2024) does the same thing on the regular “edit” page.

I will send login credentials in a secure note. The site is https://test.ryanyounginteriors.com. It’s a new site build.

I can’t understand why rolling back to the last known working version wouldn’t fix it :frowning:

Update: I just restored to an even earlier backup and I get the same issue with the WordPress editor and conerstone: blank screens. This site is hosted at SiteGround and I am using their full account backup. It seems like something got corrupted in some way. I don’t know how. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @toddbenton,

Thanks for reaching out.
I have checked your website and found that you are using the older version of Pro i.e. 6.5.6. I would suggest you update it to the latest version 6.5.10 and check if that resolves your problem or not. If not, there might be some different reasons behind your issue. I would like to suggest troubleshooting the following common issue to help us recognize the reason.

1.Theme Related Issue
2.Plugin Conflict
3.Theme Update related issue
4.CSS/JS Customization
5.Disabling Cache
6.Disabling CDN

Hi there!

I experienced the same thing.

I disabled all plugins, no result. Then I cleared my cache and browser history in Chrome and this made it work again. Safari did not show the same error.

Maybe it can help you as well.

/Tomas

Hello Tomas,

I would suggest you please troubleshoot the common issue before we check your settings.

If it doesn’t work for you please create a separate thread and then share the details. Please copy your live site to the staging server and then share the staging server login details on the new thread so we can check it on our end.

Thanks

I have the same issue. With the cornerstone editor AND simply editing posts (using the WP block editor). It looks like a Safari issue only. Can’t make it work at all and have had to switch to Chrome. (hate chrome).

I have a lot of client sites that I’m now having to check too. So far, there’s no issue so I’m thinking that it has to do with a plugin conflict on my site that the others don’t have. I’ll check and feedback if I find anything.

Hello!

Like I wrote I do not have any issues after I cleared the cache in Chrome.

Hi @tomaspernek,

Glad to know that you are not facing any issues anymore.

Thanks

Thanks all. It’s working in Firefox so I can also see that it is a browser caching issue. I thought I had ruled that out because I usually use Chrome and I tried it in Edge and had the same problem. But it’s working fine in Firefox so it’s on to clearing cache in Chrome.

I’m having the same issues as well with the update. I cleared the cache, and uploaded the older version. Still have a grey screen in Safari. Chrome seems to be working.

Same here. Not working in Chrome but OK in Firefox. Not keen on clearing my Chrome cache, however. Too much history I might not recover.

@neilhartley It’s working for me now in Chrome too without clearing the entire cache. Here’s what did it for me: If you’re using Cloudflare or any other CDN or caching plugin, clear the cache there and then empty cache and hard reload for the site only in Chrome.

I should have tried all of the Common Issues first because that would have helped me resolve this before writing in.

Hey @toddbenton,

Thanks for letting us know that the issue has been resolved for you. We thank you for sharing the things you did as well.

Cheers.
