Cornerstone Showing Outdated Content - _cornerstone_data not updating

Hi guys,

I’m having an issue that it seems lots of people have had before, though not many were provided real solutions. I think this is clearly a bug in Cornerstone.

Basically, the content on the front-end of the site is showing up just fine, and the content in wp_posts and wp_postmeta is correct, as well as in the revisions viewer.

But once you click “Edit with Cornerstone”, the data you see is totally outdated. It’s from a much older revision. Can you tell me why?

Further information:

I am running the current versions of WordPress, Cornerstone, and X Theme.
I’ve tried disabling all other plugins and using the parent theme.
I’ve cleared caches and I’ve cleared transients.
I’ve deactivated and reactivated Cornerstone.
I’ve deleted all other revisions.
I’ve tried restoring from a revision and updating the post again.

It’s worth noting, too, that unlike many others with this problem, in my case: the page is correctly set up with cornerstone. Be default, I get the “Edit with Cornerstone” message, not just code. If I try to edit outside of cornerstone, I get the warning message.

So why won’t Cornerstone update?

I did investigate further, and after deleting all revisions, I found that the only row in the database that still had the old content was the _cornerstone_data row which contains the cornerstone content. I want to know why this isn’t updating with the ACTUAL content for the page. It’s extremely frustrating.

I’ll share my login data shortly so you can take a look.

Hi @brianjohnsondesign,

Can you please also share your website URL along with the Login URL?

Thanks

Sorry, forgot! Added it to the private note. It’s the homepage I’m having issues with, though I wouldn’t be surprised if other pages are having the same issue.

Normal WordPress site, you can login at /wp-admin/

Hey @brianjohnsondesign,

The given credentials do not work for us. It seems that the given WP password is incorrect.

Please double-check. Thanks.

Apparently your forum used some of the characters in the password to format it differently… That’s why it didn’t work.

I’ll change it to something that won’t do that and attach it here.

Hi @brianjohnsondesign,

The PHP version might be the reason behind your issue, I would suggest you to upgrade the PHP version to 7.4 by contacting your Hosting Service provide and check if that issue resolves or not.
If that does not helps, please deactivate and delete the X and re-install it by downloding from your Themeco Account by following the below steps.

  1. Delete the Cornerstone, if already installed
  2. After the X theme is updated, use the link in the dashboard to automatically install the Cornerstone. It will be at the latest version

Hope it helps.
Thanks

I have updated PHP to 7.4 (also tried 7.3) and it did not solve the problem.

I deleted Cornerstone and X theme, downloaded the newest version of X, uploaded it and activated it, and then installed Cornerstone as requested and it did not solve the problem.

I also disabled all other plugins except cornerstone and tried the parent theme only and it did not work.

In all of these steps, I tried clicking “Update” from the WordPress edit screen before going to Cornerstone, hoping it would properly update everything.

When the page is loading in the WP edit screen, I can see that the content is correct and up-to-date. But then obviously it gets hidden by the “Edit with Cornerstone” button, and when I edit with Cornerstone, it’s still some weird, old content.

What is going on? You have access to the site, please take a look. It definitely seems to be a Cornerstone bug.

Hello There,

“When the page is loading in the WP edit screen, I can see that the content is correct and up-to-date. But then obviously it gets hidden by the “Edit with Cornerstone” button, and when I edit with Cornerstone, it’s still some weird, old content.”

When I check your revisions, I am seeing this:

Compared to this view in Cornerstone:

This is the cornerstone data:

How did you update the content? Please be advised that the contents you have added within the Cornerstone builder will be saved as cornerstone data. Any contents you have made outside of the builder will not be saved to the cornerstone data. The Cornerstone builder will load the last saved cornerstone data. This is one of the reasons why you are only allowed to edit the page in the Cornerstone builder. Some other times, editing outside of the builder can even corrupt the data and will no longer allow you to edit the content back in Cornerstone.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Cornerstone builder will only use the cornerstone data. Any changes or any contents you have made in the post contents using the WP Editor will be discarded.

Hope this helps.

The content was only ever edited within Cornerstone. We didn’t ever make changes outside of it. If we had, it would have started from scratch.

And yes, the revisions are correct. Note that they are different than what’s showing up in Cornerstone when I go to edit.

So no, unfortunately your response does not help me. We did everything correctly and it isn’t working.

How can I make it work?

Hi @brianjohnsondesign,

I investigated the issue, unfortunately, I was not able to trace it. I can only say the content of that text element was corrupted. I see that previous content kind of not sanitize (copied either from another site or from a word processor application) without sanitation, and that could possibly cause corruption. Since we will not able to resolve this, I rebuild that text element, and it’s now showing the right content.

Thanks,

Okay, thanks for the information.

I appreciate you rebuilding it! It is now showing correctly.

Glad we could help,

Cheers!
